How to Ensure a Successful Treatment
Invisalign aligners don’t contain any metal wires and they’re removable for your convenience, making them much easier to clean than traditional braces. Though maintaining your aligners is relatively simple, it’s still essential that you follow all of Dr. Strait’s instructions if you want your treatment to succeed.

One of the biggest downsides of metal braces is trying to keep food from getting trapped in your wires. Thankfully, Invisalign eliminates this problem by making your aligners removable, allowing you to take them out while you eat. This prevents crumbs and other bacteria from lodging under your aligners and causing an infection.
To ensure optimal results, you’ll need to wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. This leaves you with plenty of time to enjoy your standard meals, though you may need to slightly modify your eating schedule and refrain from a lot of snacking throughout the day.
While it may be an adjustment at first, you’ll find that eating with Invisalign is easy. Best of all, you can continue to eat all your favorite foods, unlike with metal braces.
Cleaning Your Aligners
A great way to maintain your aligners is to remove and clean them every morning when you wake up and every night before you go to bed. You can do this by soaking them, or by lightly brushing them with a mild soap. In addition, make sure to brush your teeth after meals to remove any leftover bacteria before placing your aligners back in.
The Invisalign Cleaning System is another great tool and can be used in addition to the methods listed above. It involves placing your aligners in a case filled with warm water and cleaning crystals. Gently shake the case for 20 seconds to activate the crystals, let your aligners soak for 15 minutes, then gently shake for another 20 seconds and rinse off your aligners.
Unfortunately, we’ve treated some patients over the years who damaged their aligners as a result of not following care instructions. To avoid wasting time and money, please keep the following tips in mind:
- Don’t use toothpaste, mouthwash, or any type of rough or colored soap on your aligners
- Don’t eat or drink with your aligners in (except water)
- Don’t put your aligners back in after eating until you’ve brushed your teeth
- Don’t take your aligners out for more than 4 hours per day
- Don’t leave your aligners in the open when you’re not wearing them
